Hiccup Cure!

The cure below is for curing human hiccups, but do dogs get hiccups? (hiccoughs?) Yes. Puppies are more prone to hiccups than adult dogs. My dog had hiccups every single day when she was a puppy, and has since grown out of that. But I wanted to write this blog entry because I got hiccups last night and was so frustrated that I couldn’t get rid of them that my wife finally began searching the internet for a hiccup cure.

I already had a sore throat, and the hiccups were making it worse. Jill found a hiccup cure! I was so amazed that I thought I’d share the cure it with you, because my previous hiccup cures before have only been successful after many attempts. (The original site was The 30-Second Hiccup Cure. He has a donation page, so if you want to give him a few dollars on paypal, go for it!

So here goes, all of you hiccupers. Don’t let any air out of your mouth during this process, even if you hiccup. It only takes about 15-30 seconds and your hiccups will be cured.

  • Breathe in through your mouth.
  • Swallow
  • Breathe in a bit more. Don’t let anything out.
  • Swallow
  • Repeat the above until you can’t do it any more
  • Slowly begin breathing again

That’s it! Too bad we can’t tell our puppies to do that, or their hiccups could go away too. If you hiccup in the middle, just keep going. They say if it doesn’t work, then you let some air out accidentally and should start over. I’ve only had to do it once through each time, and I’ve had hiccups three times since last night, which stopped immediately from this cure. Whew.

Hiccup cure update: I still love the hiccup cure above, but another hiccup cure is to concentrate on when the next hiccup will come. The stillness and calm of your body, when it’s concentrating on hiccups (or something else?) is what makes the hiccuping stop. Some say that’s why the hiccup cure above works. To trick yourself or a child into concentrating on hiccups, focus on when the next hiccup arrives. They can say “now!” right before the hiccup or if you have a clicker, give it to the ‘hiccuper’ and have them click when they feel a hiccup coming on. This hiccup cure has worked for me, and it was easier than the first hiccup cure above.

Concentration is the key to the second hiccup cure, so a session of working on Leave It or Stay with your puppy may cure her hiccups. I’ll try that the next time I see a puppy with hiccups.
