Instructions – Tricks and Treats

This page has important details about what to have ready for your class, etc.  A link to this page should be in your confirmation email, so save that for future reference. Check out this page again before your class, as we may add more files for you to reference.

Please bring with you to class:

  • Vaccination records. Contact your vet to have them fax us proof of vaccinations (Distemper, Parvo, Rabies, etc., this is usually a receipt) to (206) 866-6786. Have them write “Ahimsa Dog Training class” on the first page or cover sheet. You can also bring them yourself and give it to your trainer.
  • Lots of tiny treats (you may feed something like 100 to your dog, so small is good).
  • Comfortable shoes (with backs) on your feet. This is an especially active class, so you’ll need to make sure your shoes can stay on your feet and you won’t hurt yourself moving quickly in them!
  • Rug, towel, thin dog bed, or mat to practice relaxing on in class. We have loaner towels, but having your own bed is best.
  • Clicker (optional, will be provided in your first week of class)
  • Treat pouch – some way to easily access your treats.
  • Your dog on a harness, head collar, or a regular snap collar. If you’re used to using a correction collar (i.e. slip/choke chain or prong collar), please talk to your instructor about whether a harness or regular collar is a safe alternative.
  • A regular 4-10 ft leash, preferably soft nylon, cotton or leather. Please don’t bring your dog to class on a retractable leash. Many nylon and chain are painful on your hands and flexi-leashes are often disasters in class.

 

NOTE: This class is not a good first training class, and is not for dogs who growl, bark excessively, or are otherwise ‘reactive’ to other dogs or to people. If your dog has reactivity issues, please contact our store ASAP to see if the Growly Dog class, Focus and Control, or private lessons are more appropriate. We can apply your class fee to those sessions if you contact us with enough notice before your Sports and Games class starts.

Absences & Course Cancellations:  If your dog is not feeling well, please do not bring him or her to class.  Click here for more info on missing class.

When you first come into the classroom, please find a spot to sit, then calmly massage your dog or work on training.  Please do this instead of having your dog meet other dogs.

This class is designed to be mostly for fun, but it also helps you and your dog become a team. You’ll build collaborative skills with your dog and improve your training skills and mechanics in a fun, non-competition setting.

Enjoy agility equipment, tricks, relaxation and focus exercises where dogs can learn at their own pace and burn off some energy. Teach your dog to crawl, bow, jump, duck, climb, and more!

*Swapping Classes:  Sports & Games is an “ongoing” class so you can reschedule (swap) class dates according to your needs during your enrollment period which begins on your first scheduled class date. Your scheduled class dates reserve your dog a spot in that class. When you register, please note there may be skip dates when no classes are held (e.g. holidays) and your pass is extended accordingly. 

You can manage your own schedule on our website and swap your reservation(s) with other class dates during your enrollment period.  If there’s a class reservation that you can’t make or a date you want to change,  login to View & Swap Sessions. Watch the How to Swap video here.  You can swap up to 1 day in advance online.  By phone or email, we need at least 2 days in advance of your reservation to process your request.  If you don’t unreserve or swap the class that you can’t attend, the class is forfeit.

K9 Nosework 1

More about the Intro to K9 Nosework – Level 1 class:

Inspired by professional detection dogs, K9 Nosework is an outlet for companion dogs to engage their natural scenting instincts. In this first level, dogs will tap into their hunting drive for treats to build independent searching skills and confidence. This class is appropriate for dogs who are new to nosework but interested in competing in NACSW trials.

K9 Nosework is designed to allow all dogs the opportunity to search independently with individualized attention. Therefore, dogs will stay inside their cars and take turns searching inside of the training room for approximately 2-4 runs each. This setup makes it a great opportunity for reactive or overly excited dogs to learn a new skill in a less stimulating environment. For dogs that are reactive towards people, please inquire regarding private training.

Long-line leashes of 8-15 feet are encouraged, but not required.

Intro to K9 Nosework – Level 1 is a 5 lesson “series” class scheduled 1 day a week over a 5-week period (unless there are skip dates, e.g., for Holidays). Classes can’t be swapped or rescheduled because each class has a set begin and end date with the same dogs every week.

More about the Nosework Games class:

Do you want a new enrichment activity to do with your dog during the cold and rainy weather? Does your dog lack confidence in new environments? Does your dog have a lot of energy and need an outlet? Our Nosework Games class is based on the growing sport of K9 Nosework. Dogs will learn to navigate through obstacles and distractions to search for treats and their handlers’ scent.

Skills include:

  • Searching on Cue
  • Settling on a mat
  • Long line leash walking skills

*The class is designed as an introduction to searching and does not utilize target odors (birch, anise, and clove).

Reactivity Evaluation

    • Age: 6 months or over
    • 1 day: 1 hour, Limited to 2 dogs per class
    • Ability to swap classes: no
    • Format: indoors. Humans attend the entire class but dogs are evaluated individually for 25 min each and need to wait in the car for their turn in the classroom. If your dog cannot comfortably hang out in the car for an hour due to anxiety or the weather, please arrange for someone to be with them. If you are not able to have someone wait with your dog in your car and are not comfortable leaving them alone please contact us by phone or email at least one week prior to your session to discuss options.
  • REQUIRED Prerequisites: Leash Aggression 101

More about the Reactivity Evaluation class:

Dogs over react to other dogs out of fear, frustration or aggression. The Reactivity Evaluation class includes the fake dog test which will help you understand more about the emotions underlying your dog’s reactivity and whether the Growly dog class is the appropriate next step for your dog.

Topics include:

  • Reading dog body language.
  • Safe and less stressful leash handling skills.
  • How to do “set ups” to rehabilitate your dog.

The Reactivity Evaluation is single class and can’t be swapped or rescheduled. Please see our cancellation policy below.

Room Rental for Dogs to Play or Train

  • Age: All (Dogs must be fully vaccinated)
  • 1 day class: 1 hour
  • Dates are not swappable
  • Format: Indoors, Satellite Campus
  • Prerequisites: Must be an Ahimsa client (attended our classes or private training)

Come play or train inside with your dog or with a few doggie friends! Ahimsa has expanded so we now have a new, large training room for rent as an indoor private dog park. Located right in Seattle – the same building as our main classroom in Ballard. The room has the same open space, padded floors, high ceilings and skylights that you have seen in our main classroom. Room includes use of jumps, tunnels, toys, and flirt pole. There is a parking space right in front of the room so you can unload and load your dog and any training equipment easily.

Ideal for:

  • reactive dogs who have issues with people or other dogs
  • play dates with doggy friends
  • dog who are practicing obedience skills or basic agility
  • high energy dogs who need room to run without distractions
  • older dogs who need to exercise in a safe space
  • dogs (and people) who just want to stay warm and dry

More about the Growly Dog Clinic class:

Growly Dog Clinic takes place in a secluded area of Discovery Park which is a short drive from Ahimsa. The exact location of the Clinic will be in your registration confirmation email. The quiet park location is more conducive to reducing reactivity than a busy neighborhood. Dogs will be paired for set-ups similar to week 4 set ups of the Growly Dog class.

Your 6 Growly Dog Clinic reservations must be used within three months from the date of the first Growly Dog Clinic session.

Growly Dog Advanced

Your dog must have a reactivity threshold of across the street or less without barking or lunging. Within that distance your dog should be relaxed enough to perform some basic obedience behaviors and be comfortable enough to take treats.

More about the Growly Dog Advanced class:

This class is for owners who have mastered the skills from Growly Dog class and want to move a little further towards socializing with other dogs. Classes are limited to 5 dogs. At the start of each class, people will leave their dogs in their cars while they check in and have questions answered by the trainer. After check-ins, we will spend roughly 45 minutes doing set ups both inside and outside the classroom, with the dog groups arranged by the trainers. At the end of class we will have a short wrap up to address any questions or issues that came up over the course of the training.

This class focuses on:

  • Shrinking the bubble – help each dog become comfortable around other dogs at gradually smaller distances
  • Teaching you how and when to incorporate a longer leash into your set ups to improve the training
  • Teaching you different variations of Growly Dog set ups to help generalize calm behavior around triggers in a variety of contexts and situations
  • Teaching you the skills to orchestrate your own training set ups to speed up the rehabilitation process

You need to have experience using a marker (e.g. a clicker, or the word “yes”) to identify when your dog has noticed another dog before any growling, barking or lunging. You should also be comfortable using the leash to stop your dog gently and have a fairly good understanding of what your dog’s triggers are.

More about the Growly Dog class:

Growly Dog classes are set up to give dogs individualized attention with only 4 to 5 dogs per class and 2 instructors. Get started on improving your dog’s coping skills so that walks can be less stressful and more enjoyable for both of you.

We’ll start these classes with a check in and answer any questions that came up over the course from the past week. Next, we’ll have you practice the skills you’ve learned with the other students in the class so that your dog can be exposed to other dogs at a safe, controlled distance. The focus during these weeks is to hone your training technique and adjust our recommendations based on what’s working for you and your dog, and gradually shrink their “bubble” (the distance at which they’re comfortable with other dogs).
