  • Format: indoors. Humans attend the entire class but dogs are evaluated individually for 25 min each and need to wait in the car for their turn in the classroom. If your dog cannot comfortably hang out in the car for an hour due to anxiety or the weather, please arrange for someone to be with them. If you are not able to have someone wait with your dog in your car and are not comfortable leaving them alone please contact us by phone or email at least one week prior to your session to discuss options.

The Reactivity Evaluation class is to teach people the skills they will need for the Growly Dog Class which addresses dog to dog reactivity and is not for dogs with aggression toward humans. Dogs over react to other dogs out of fear, frustration or aggression. The Reactivity Evaluation class includes the fake dog test which will help you understand more about the emotions underlying your dog’s reactivity and whether the Growly dog class is the appropriate next step for your dog.

Topics include:

• Reading dog body language.
• Safe and less stressful leash handling skills.
• How to do “set ups” to rehabilitate your dog.

The Reactivity Evaluation is single class and can’t be swapped or rescheduled. Please see our cancellation policy below.

You’ve worked hard to have your special needs dog functioning adequately in a classroom environment and in your neighborhood. You have mastered more than the basics of clicker training and are ready for a new challenge.

This class is limited to 5 dogs so each dog gets individualized attention. Dogs build their skills each week to prepare for the course on graduation day.

Agility for Growly Dogs is a 4-lesson “series” class scheduled 1 day a week over a 4-week period (unless there are skip dates, e.g., for Holidays). Classes can’t be swapped or rescheduled because each class has a set begin and end date with content that builds from class to class.

• Format: indoors & outdoors: dogs stay in the cars until checked in followed by approximately 45 minutes of set ups both inside and outside.

Your dog must have a reactivity threshold of across the street or less without barking or lunging. Within that distance your dog should be relaxed enough to perform some basic obedience behaviors and be comfortable enough to take treats.

More about the Growly Dog Advanced class:

This class is for owners who have mastered the skills from Growly Dog class and want to move a little further towards socializing with other dogs. Classes are limited to 5 dogs. At the start of each class, people will leave their dogs in their cars while they check in and have questions answered by the trainer. After check-ins, we will spend roughly 45 minutes doing set ups both inside and outside the classroom, with the dog groups arranged by the trainers. At the end of class we will have a short wrap up to address any questions or issues that came up over the course of the training.

This class focuses on:

• Shrinking the bubble – help each dog become comfortable around other dogs at gradually smaller distances
• Teaching you how and when to incorporate a longer leash into your set ups to improve the training
• Teaching you different variations of Growly Dog set ups to help generalize calm behavior around triggers in a variety of contexts and situations
• Teaching you the skills to orchestrate your own training set ups to speed up the rehabilitation process

You need to have experience using a marker (e.g. a clicker, or the word “yes”) to identify when your dog has noticed another dog before any growling, barking or lunging. You should also be comfortable using the leash to stop your dog gently and have a fairly good understanding of what your dog’s triggers are.

Growly Dog Advanced is a 4 lesson “series” class scheduled 1 day a week over a 4-week period (unless there are skip dates, e.g., for Holidays). Classes can’t be swapped or rescheduled because each class has a set begin and end date with content that builds from class to class.

More about the Growly Dog class:

Growly Dog classes are set up to give dogs individualized attention with only 4 to 5 dogs per class and 2 instructors. Get started on improving your dog’s coping skills so that walks can be less stressful and more enjoyable for both of you.

We’ll start these classes with a check in and answer any questions that came up over the course from the past week. Next, we’ll have you practice the skills you’ve learned with the other students in the class so that your dog can be exposed to other dogs at a safe, controlled distance. The focus during these weeks is to hone your training technique and adjust our recommendations based on what’s working for you and your dog, and gradually shrink their “bubble” (the distance at which they’re comfortable with other dogs).
