Manners Minder / Treat and Train

I LOVE the Manners Minder, and my dogs do, too! The Manners Minder Remote Dog Training System (formerly the Treat and Train) is a remote control treat dispenser for training dogs to mind their manners at the door and elsewhere.

The Manners Minder was originally developed for the Sharper Image, with the brand name of Treat and Train. The remote controls the Manners Minder from up to 100 feet away (even between walls), so this "treat machine" is great for training dogs with separation anxiety problems, training agility go-outs, crate training your dog, and any other kind of dog training that could benefit from treating your dog for good manners from a distance.

The Manners Minder is not only a remote control dog treat feeder. It can also be set to variable duration, where the Manners Minder automatically feeds your dog in a down-stay at random intervals, without the remote. The Manners Minder is great for distance down-stays or for dogs that eat too quickly from their regular dog dish.

See a client's review on the Treat and Train - the prototype of the Manners Minder - in my forum. There are also more Manners Minders reviews below.

You can put kibble or training treats in the Manners Minder. Zukes Mini Naturals are great dog treats for the Manners Minder, as they're not crumbly.

Please note that your dog will probably LOVE the Manners Minder. That means you should never leave it out with dogs that might resource guard the Manners Minder machine. If you do get guarding, either train one dog alone with this treat dispenser, or remove the bowl and place the Manners Minder up high, so that the treats fall in a dispersed way on the ground. This may not be enough for some dogs, so always use common sense when training with the Manners Minder.

In the Manners Minder Dog Treat Training System box:

  • Clicker-sized remote control with 4 channels (so you you can train different dogs).
  • Target training wand - hold in your hand or use with the detachable weighted base - to train tricks, heeling, and jumping. Treat by hand or use the Manners Minder.
  • Two training treat dispenser disks for different sized kibble or dog treats of uniform small sizes.
  • Dr. Sophia Yin's illustrated dog training manual and dog training DVD. This free training DVD has info on using the Manners Minder, including how to train your dog to not jump at the door.
  • The Manners Minder's rugged, dog-proof housing is 16 x 7 x 8 inches; weighs 3.5 lbs. and is remarkably stable. Sagan took just a bit to figure out that the Manners Minder wasn't a huge Kong. The whole Manners Minder box ships at just over 7 pounds.
  • The Manners Minder training treat dispenser will run for about four months on 4 D batteries (not included). The remote control runs on an included 23A-12V battery.

Caution

Leigh - 31st July 2008

If this product is left in the environment in multi-dogs homes while the dogs are unsupervised it can become a source of food aggression between dogs. There have been several trips to the vets for stitches and a sudden increased tension between the dogs that when this product was removed went away.

Four paws up!

sidekick - 15th March 2008

I used it for the first time today and oh my gosh it is awesome! The tone that comes before the treat works like a clicker, and it's really cool to see the dog get it and start figuring out what works. It was great for teaching "go to your rug" when there was a knock at the door. The training manual is really good, too and the whole thing is easy to use and understand.

I only have a a couple of minor issues with it:

*It looks like a work-for-food toy, so some dogs paw at it and try to push it around to get the treat out. I could see it getting beat up over time.

*It only has one tray for the treats to go into, which isn't great for multi-dog families. I would love to see one with two food trays at the end a Y shape for working with two dogs at once.

Manners Minder gets Two furry paws up!

From MannersMinder website - 25th February 2008

The MannersMinder is a bone-a-fide winner for both dogs and their humans. Dogs get quality playtime with their owners and owners get a better behaved dog in the house.

Like the dog and human suddenly speak each other's language, the MannersMinder is a great way for dog and human to communicate better and bond more strongly.

Every dog, whether "show dog" well-behaved or a ruffian in need of serious indoor manners, should have one. Two opposable thumbs, two furry paws up!

Manners Minder instructions are outstanding

From MannersMinder website - 25th February 2008

[The Manners Minder] is one of the best pieces of training equipment brought to the public in the last 30+ years. Not only is the product designed so that the average public consumer can operate it effectively, the instructions that accompany the MannersMinder are just outstandingly well presented.

This product applies sound principles of learning and makes it clear.

Treat and Train is my new favorite toy!

Stef - originally posted in the forum - 25th February 2008

We feed exclusively out of [the Manners Minder] and it is providing us with almost daily noticeable benefits. My stubborn Great Dane is now offering sits all the time rather than doing her shuffle backwards five or more feet before sitting on command.

My dogs get along great already but they are unbelievable about taking turns at mealtime with this thing. It just amazes me. There's also the added benefit of forcing Jayden the Dane to eat much slower which should help decrease her bloat risk.

But mostly I see both of them being much more calm in general throughout the day with our comings and goings from the house. Much less pushy about competing and nosing, nudging me specifically for attention.

Even when they rough-house, it's now almost silent and they lay down and mouth each other. It's really really cute!
