Seminar Description:

Braga
Make your seminar a vacation, too!

Join us for Grisha's first BAT Instructor's Course in Europe. Students in this course will have the opportunity to take the CBATI (Certified BAT Instructor) test. You can be one of the first CBATIs in Europe!

Pre-requisite (must be completed before the seminar):

This hands-on workshop will help you take your BAT skills to the next level, so you can help more dogs. Each participant will work with two dogs (and their handlers) with reactivity issues. You will take the lead on one dog/handler team and coach another trainer as s/he works with another dog, so you will get plenty of practice teaching others about BAT.

You will participate in problem-solving sessions for a total of 6 dogs (there are 12 participants). We will analyze videos shot of the participants so that you'll be able to hone your observation skills and improve your technique.

Students will also practice using BAT in a group setting (as with a Growly Dog class). We know that you won't be able to see all of the different possibilities for BAT in just these 5 days, so you will also be given some problem scenarios to analyze in small groups.

You will get a lot out of these 5 days!

In this interactive workshop, you will see understand more of the technical details of working with BAT as a professional trainer, including taking a good history, following up with the client, deciding which methods to use with the dog (and whether that includes BAT), reading body language, teaching some other skills, knowing when to refer out, answering questions about BAT, etc.

This will be an intense learning process, and to help facilitate that, we are limiting this workshop to 12 participants. We will allow 12 auditors as well. The auditors will partner with the full participants and will learn a lot, but will not be doing as much hands-on work.

Braga is Beautiful!

CERTIFICATION: This instructor's course will prepare you to take the BAT certification exam for professional dog trainers (optional). The certification application is free for participants and auditors of the instructor's course (one attempt - $300 value). The written portion of the test is taken at the end of the workshop. A completed certification requires 100 hours experience training client dogs or modifying behavior as the primary instructor, plus 100 hours of experience working with clients (dogs alone or dog-human teams) on reactivity. These hours can be accrued before or after the workshop and exam. Auditors who pass the written exam will also need to submit a video case study. This case study is not required for participants.

Note: The workshop is not necessary for certification, but it is highly recommended. Tests will be available at other times, to be announced later. Becoming a Certified BAT Instructor (CBATI) will also get you a listing on the FunctionalRewards.com website, discounts at DoggieZen.com/store, discounts at future workshops with Grisha, and access to a special Yahoo group. Click here to read more about CBATI Certification, including how to record the hours and some information on the video case studies.

About the Seminar Presenter: Grisha Stewart is the owner of Ahimsa Dog Training and the author of 5 DVDs and two books: "Behavior Adjustment Training: BAT for Dog Reactivity" and the "Official Dog Training Manual."   She specializes in the treatment and prevention of dog aggression and fear. She developed Behavior Adjustment Training as a tool to help rehabilitate dogs with reactivity issues.

Grisha has a Master's in Mathematics from Bryn Mawr College. She is now pursuing a Master's in Integrative Studies in Psychology with an emphasis in animal behavior at Antioch University, while still running her 6-trainer business and dog training supply store in Seattle, Washington, USA. Her first career as a theoretical mathematician and college instructor serves her well in dog training and behavior consultations, because she relies heavily on the problem solving, critical thinking, and teaching skills she gained in that field. Since founding Ahimsa Dog Training in Seattle in 2003, she has found her canine and human students to be much more excited about learning than her college students!

Canine behavior fascinates Grisha and she is highly motivated to help improve our techniques for rehabilitating and training dogs. This led her to develop BAT, Behavior Adjustment Training, which uses environmental consequences to reward the dog and eliminate problem behaviors.  Click here to learn more about Grisha.

Short intro to BAT.

Other BAT Instructor's Course Details

  • Full participants are paired up with a handler and dog. DO NOT BRING YOUR OWN DOG. Let us know if you have a service animal that you will be bringing. Please be aware that, because of the nature of this seminar, having a service animal with you may limit your ability to observe the hands-on work.
  • If you plan to register as a participant or auditor and have a dog that you would like to have worked at the seminar with a friend as the handler, please contact us so that we can assess whether this is possible. You cannot handle or work with your own dog, because the seminar is about teaching you to instruct other people.
  • CEUs:  Certified Pet Dog Trainers will earn 21 continuing education units (CPDT CEUs) for this seminar. We also expect to have IAABC CEUs.
  • We will have beverage breaks and provide lunch, including a vegetarian option. However, we will not be able to cater to all dietary needs, so if you would like is to not provide lunch, let us know.
  • Location Notes: One reason that Grisha picked Portugal for this BAT course is because attendees will benefit from the relatively low cost of airfare, meals, and hotel. This course is in English so that dog trainers and behaviorists from all over Europe will be able to attend. We anticipate having trainers come from the UK, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Norway, and the rest of Europe
  • We are doing this seminar at the Goldel Tulip Hotel in Braga, Portugal (indoors and outdoors). Click here for hotel information. Book your room asap. Singles are 40 €; Doubles 45 €. Mention that you are going to the BAT Instructor's course.
