If you are thinking of getting a dog, but can’t make a full committment yet, or want to test out the waters, fostering is a great way to help a dog in need without committing 10-20 years of your life.
Most area shelters and rescue organizations have a foster program. One such program is Ginger’s Pet Rescue. Ginger’s “specializes in Death Row Dogs” and is about to have 80 dogs from a puppy mill bust in the next few weeks. It seems like every time I hear about Ginger, she’s getting another huge batch of dogs. She needs to mobilize all the foster homes that she can get!

I am a foster mom in Ginger’s Pet Rescue network and I just got an email from her, saying the first wave of 80 small-breed dogs will be ready for foster homes on October 1. Allow me to second the notion that fostering is GREAT! It helps to strengthen the socialization skills of your dog, and you get to practice all the great training techniques learned at Ahimsa on a new dog. If for some reason your foster match doesn’t work out, Ginger works quickly to place the dog with someone else, so you need not worry about being stuck in a bad situation. Apply to be a foster parent at her site, link is in the blog post.

Hello, our family was wondering about fostering a dog from you for a short time. We are not thinking about adopting, we just want a dog in our house for a 1 week or so. There are 2 children in this house, one aged 9, and one aged 13. They are very good with animals. Please write back…
