Good idea about the Boutelle books! I added links to those. Also about ethology. It's a must.

SO SO SO on the money with ALL your tips, Grisha! :-)

I inhaled all the Nicole Wilde books, too, and want to be her when I grow up.... And it's interesting to read about your own evolution into dog training, as I pretty much followed the same path (reading, watching, volunteering, all self-taught) but sometimes get the impression from other trainers/groups that I'm "less than" since I'm not yet CCPDT certified or a graduate of a certain school or been doing it for 78 years.... I opened my business in July 2008, though, have helped over 280 clients, and am coming up on four years, so something must be going right! :-) I think a genuine passion for helping the animals and empathy for clients is THE most important element, along with solid know-how.

One other thing I would add is a book I found REALLY helpful as to the brass-tacks of the business side is "How To Run A Dog Business," by Veronica Boutelle, as well as more background, ethology-based books by Stanley Coren.

Gonna borrow this for my own FB page to help pay it forward! :-)

Thanks for the info. As a college student studying animal behavior through psychology I became interested in this. I was hoping it could be something I do on the side while getting my degree, but it looks like it will have to wait.
